Section 7: Preliminary Dissertation Planning

As a result of my studies of learning in an online video game community (Owens, 2010) and in an online community focused on building video games (Owens, 2011 & Owens, 2012) I’ve become convinced that we need further development of knowledge to support the study of these kinds of online informal learning communities. My dissertation idea paper lays out some of the key mythological and theoretical approaches for a project to inform the study of these kinds of online informal learning communities. For a sense of what exactly this kind of study could entail, see (Owens, forthcoming) an article for a peer reviewed journal focused on methods for the social study of software that I developed as a means to develop a smaller scale version of the dissertation project.
